A few years ago, my husband and I spent a sunny fall day at Tanaka Farms Pumpkin Patch in Irvine, California.
We weren't taking a big trip or following a packed itinerary. We simply wanted to get outside, walk around, enjoy the season and do something different together.
Looking back at our photos reminded me why outings like this can be such an enjoyable way to spend a fall weekend.
Pumpkin patches are often associated with families and children, but they can also make an easy fall date for couples who enjoy being outdoors, exploring somewhere local and slowing down for a few hours.
And if you're coming from farther away, a visit to Tanaka Farms can easily become part of a relaxed Orange County getaway.
What to Know Before Visiting Tanaka Farms in 2026
Tanaka Farms' Irvine Pumpkin Patch opened September 12 and is scheduled to remain open through November 1, 2026.
Reservations are required.
Current October hours are:
Monday through Thursday
9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Last entry at 5 p.m.
Friday through Sunday
9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Last entry at 8 p.m.
The farm notes that operating hours are weather permitting, and that is worth paying attention to when planning your visit.
Weather and What to Wear at Tanaka Farms
Southern California fall weather doesn't always feel like fall.
October afternoons in Irvine can still be sunny and quite warm. Earlier this October, Tanaka Farms was dealing with enough heat that it encouraged visitors to come during its evening Pumpkin Patch Nights instead of spending the afternoon in the sun.
If you're visiting during a warmer day, I would bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
I was definitely glad I applied sunblock, had my hat wore comfortable casual clothing and walking shoes when we visited.
Rain creates a different issue.
Because Tanaka Farms is a working outdoor farm, wet conditions can affect individual attractions even when the entire Pumpkin Patch remains open.
That happened on October 11, 2026. Tanaka Farms announced that the Pumpkin Patch was still open, but the Bee Train and Veggie Patch were temporarily closed because of rain.
They even suggested bringing rain boots and an umbrella for visitors who still wanted to come.
That is exactly why I recommend checking Tanaka Farms' current social media posts before making the drive, especially when there has been recent rain or unusually hot weather.
Conditions on farm pathways can also be dusty when it is dry and muddy when it is wet.
Tanaka Farms recommends comfortable shoes suitable for walking on dirt pathways. I would avoid sandals, flip-flops, dress shoes or anything you would be upset about getting dirty.
For an evening visit, bringing a light layer can also be useful once the sun goes down.
What I would bring
Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes
Hat or a visor
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Wipes/hand sanitizers(water stations might be far from your lacation)
Refillable water bottle
Light layer for an evening visit or just skin layering protection during the day
Rain boots or weather-resistant shoes if rain has recently fallen
Clothes you don't mind getting a little dusty or muddy
Most importantly, check the Tanaka Farms website and its latest Instagram or Facebook posts on the day of your visit.
The website is useful for scheduled hours and reservations. Social media may give you more immediate information about rain, heat, temporary activity closures or changing farm conditions.
Why Tanaka Farms Is Different From a Temporary Pumpkin Patch
Tanaka Farms is a working family farm in Irvine rather than a temporary pumpkin attraction set up only for October.
The Tanaka family has farmed in Southern California for generations, and the Irvine farm has developed seasonal experiences that give visitors an opportunity to spend time on a working agricultural property.
During pumpkin season, that means fields filled with pumpkins, wagon rides and other farm activities rather than simply walking through a decorated lot.
When we visited, part of what I enjoyed was how casual the experience felt. There were pumpkins throughout the fields, people walking around the farm and plenty of places to stop for photos.
We didn't feel like we had to rush from one attraction to another.
What Can You Do at the Irvine Pumpkin Patch?
The 2026 Pumpkin Patch includes experiences such as wagon rides, the Barnyard Educational Exhibit, the U-Pick Veggie Patch, games and the Pumpkin Cannon.
Some activities are offered only during certain days or hours.
The games and Pumpkin Cannon, for example, are currently offered Friday after noon and on Saturdays and Sundays.
The farm also has its Produce Market Stand, where you can find fresh seasonal produce and products from local artisans.
If you're hungry, Tanaka Grill serves seasonal food and treats during selected pumpkin-season hours.
Because this is a working farm and conditions can change, I wouldn't plan your entire visit around one particular activity without checking the latest update first.
Is Tanaka Farms a Good Fall Date for Couples?
I think it is.
Not every date has to mean going to dinner or planning an expensive weekend away.
Sometimes it is nice to go somewhere where you can walk, talk, take photos and experience something seasonal together.
That's what my husband and I enjoyed about our visit. We wandered around, took photos and enjoyed being outside.
And there is something about being surrounded by rows of orange pumpkins that makes it feel like fall, even when Southern California temperatures haven't quite gotten the message.
You don't need to rush through everything.
Walk around. Take the photos. Pick out a pumpkin. Stop for something to eat. See what catches your attention.
Some of the best outings are the ones that aren't overly planned.
Should You Visit During the Day or at Night?
Both can work, depending on the experience you want.
A daytime visit gives you the classic farm setting, plenty of natural light for photos and a chance to see the fields clearly.
But if the weather is unusually hot, evening may be more comfortable.
During October, Tanaka Farms stays open until 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday(see the latest entry in their posted schedules). The farm has been promoting its Pumpkin Patch Nights, when visitors can come after 6 p.m. as temperatures cool and the farm lights up for the evening.
For couples, I actually think that could make the outing feel a little more like a fall date.
Before choosing a time, check the weather forecast along with the farm's latest updates.
Turn Your Visit Into an Orange County Getaway
If you live nearby, Tanaka Farms can easily be a morning or afternoon outing.
But if you're coming from farther away, you could make the pumpkin patch part of a relaxed one-night Orange County getaway rather than spending most of the day driving there and back.
Irvine is the most convenient place to stay if being close to the farm is your priority.
You could visit the pumpkin patch, have dinner nearby and enjoy a slower evening instead of getting back on the freeway right away.
If you're considering staying overnight, you can compare places to stay in Irvine and nearby Orange County for your travel dates.
The goal doesn't have to be squeezing several attractions into one weekend.
One seasonal experience, somewhere comfortable to stay, a good meal and a little unplanned time together can make a perfectly good getaway.
Or Spend Part of the Weekend Near the Coast
If you would rather combine your farm visit with some time near the ocean, Newport Beach is another option.
You could visit Tanaka Farms earlier in the day and leave enough time for a coastal walk, dinner or a relaxed evening near the water.
Costa Mesa can also make a practical base, especially if restaurants and shopping are part of your plans. I wouldn't feel obligated to add another major attraction simply because you're spending the night.
Sometimes the pumpkin patch, a good dinner and a little wandering are enough.
Getting Around Orange County
For most Southern California residents and neighboring cities, driving your own car will probably be the easiest way to visit Tanaka Farms.
If you're flying into Orange County or visiting without your own vehicle, having a car can make it easier to move between Irvine, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and other nearby destinations without building the entire day around transportation schedules.
If you need one for the trip, you can compare rental car options for your Orange County travel dates.
Make Sure You Choose the Irvine Location
Tanaka Farms currently has two different pumpkin experiences in Orange County.
The farm featured in this article is:
Tanaka Farms
5380 3/4 University Drive
Irvine, California 92612
Tanaka Farms also operates Hana Field in Costa Mesa, which has its own Pumpkin Patch experience.
They are separate locations.
If you're buying tickets or entering the destination into navigation, double-check the address before leaving.
Before You Leave Home
Because this is an outdoor seasonal attraction, I would make one final check on the day of your visit.
Check the official Tanaka Farms Pumpkin Patch page for scheduled hours, reservations and current visitor information.
Then look at Tanaka Farms' latest socials(Instagram or Facebook) posts.
That second step is especially important when there has been rain, unusually hot weather or changing farm conditions.
As the October 11 rain showed, the farm itself can remain open while individual activities temporarily close.
A two-minute check before leaving home could save you from arriving expecting an activity that isn't operating that day.

Would We Go Again?
Yes.
Our visit wasn't an elaborate vacation. It was simply a beautiful Southern California day, a pumpkin farm and a few hours spent together doing something outside our normal routine.
And that's part of what I want Travel Smart Anytime to be about. Travel doesn't always require getting on an airplane or going somewhere far away.
Sometimes an afternoon spent somewhere different is enough to make you feel like you've gotten away.
And if you can turn that afternoon into a comfortable little getaway together, even better.
